FAQs
What is the difference between 347 and 347H stainless steel?
347H has a higher carbon content than standard 347, which enhances its strength at elevated temperatures. This makes it better suited for pressure vessels and boiler tubes operating at 550°C and above.
Is 347H suitable for welding applications?
Yes. 347H has good weldability, but post-weld cleaning is important to remove scale and reduce sensitization risk. For critical welds, use stabilized welding rods like ER347.
Can 347H stainless steel replace 316H or 321?
In many high-temp environments, yes. 347H offers similar high-temperature strength as 316H but with better intergranular corrosion resistance due to its columbium stabilization. It’s also more cost-effective than 321 in some markets.
What is the maximum service temperature for 347H?
347H is rated for service up to ~870°C (1600°F). However, for long-term exposure, the ideal range is below 800°C to minimize embrittlement.
Is 347H stainless steel approved for ASME or pressure vessel use?
Yes. 347H is commonly used under ASME Section VIII Div. 1 and meets the requirements for pressure and high-temperature service in thermal plants, refineries, and more.
