Monel 400 is a standard material in marine engineering, chemical processing (especially hydrofluoric acid service), and petroleum refining. It’s widely used in heat exchangers, pump shafts, and alkylation units.
Is Monel 400 magnetic?
No. Monel 400 is non-magnetic in the annealed condition, which makes it ideal for sensitive applications like instrumentation, electronics, and naval sonar.
Can Monel 400 be used in high-temperature environments?
Yes, it retains strength and corrosion resistance up to ~480°C. For higher temperatures, Inconel or Hastelloy grades are recommended.
How does Monel 400 handle hydrofluoric acid (HF)?
Monel 400 is one of the few metals that resists hydrofluoric acid in all concentrations and temperatures. It’s the preferred alloy for HF alkylation units.
What’s the main difference between Monel 400 and Monel K500?
K500 is a precipitation-hardened version of Monel 400 with nearly twice the strength. However, Monel 400 offers better ductility, weldability, and is easier to machine.
Is Monel 400 weldable?
Yes, using Monel filler metal 60. However, attention must be paid to heat input and post-weld stress relief in critical applications.
Is Monel 400 better than stainless steel in seawater?
Absolutely. Unlike 316L, Monel 400 does not suffer from pitting or crevice corrosion in chloride-rich environments like seawater.
